Artist's Comments
The Turtle Ship was a type of large warship used by the Royal Korean Navy during the Joseon Dynasty from the early 15th century up until the 19th century. The Turtle Ship was successful because its new design allowed it to use charging tactics during battles. The Turtle Ship was a sea tank originating from spear ships and wood board covered warships. It used iron rods to strengthen the structure of the ship and had a covering like a turtle. The front part of the ship was shaped as a dragon head. The rear was shaped as a tail. There were several gun ports throughout the ship.
